When appliances start breaking down, and you don’t know what to do, you may be tempted to give up and replace them with newer models. But there are times that a broken washer, dryer, or fridge can last much longer with just a quick fix.

But how do you tell the difference between needing a new part versus needing an all-new appliance? When you think about replacing appliances, you should consider how long an appliance can work for you and how much it will cost to get the one you have up and running again.

There are a few fixes that come along with owning appliances, and some appliance repair is much easier than you might think. On the other hand, there are times when it makes more sense to replace that broken washer. Following are some of the most common problems homeowners run into with their appliances.

    The Washer

Some issues that come up with a washing machine can be fixed. Here are some simple ones that Comfort Appliance Services has outlined:

    • If the temperature of the water is not what it is supposed to be, you may need to replace the washer’s temperature selector switch.
    • If the washing machine is overfilling, try replacing the water-level switch.
    • Is it extra loud and vibrating? The spin basket may need to be fixed or replaced.
    • If the door won’t stay locked or it won’t open, the problem is the door lock assembly, and it will need to be replaced.

If your washing machine is acting up and it is relatively new, the repairs you need may still be covered by the warranty. However, if there are several things going on with your machine and it is over ten years old, it is probably time to think about getting a new one.

    The Dryer

    • A dryer that runs forever but does not dry your clothes probably has a broken thermal fuse. It will need to be replaced.
    • If your dryer runs but turns off before it is done, try replacing the thermostat.
    • A dryer that shakes until everything you have stored on it falls off is going to need a new drum seal.
    • If your dryer is smoking, it is time to let it go.

If the repairs do not fix the problem and your dryer has been around for a long time, it may be less expensive to just replace it.

    The Refrigerator

    • A door that won’t close the way it is supposed to will need a new door seal.
    • If the refrigerator light does not come on when you open the door, it most likely needs a new light bulb.

If your refrigerator is leaking, the ice maker isn’t working, or your fridge is not staying cool enough, it is a good time to call an appliance repair service. However, if these things are happening and you have had your fridge for more than 13 years, it may be time to look into buying a new refrigerator.

    The Dishwasher

    • If the dishwasher stops before it cycles through, the door may not be closing as it should, and you probably need a new door latch assembly installed.
    • If it is leaking, the door seal should be replaced.
    • If the dishes are not drying, replace the thermostat with a new one.
    • If it is not getting enough water inside, the water inlet valve is probably the culprit and will need to be replaced.
    • If your dishwasher is cracked on the inside and is leaking water, causing damage to your floors or cabinets, you probably need a new dishwasher.

Dishwashers that are ten years old or getting close are probably not going to last much longer, and it is probably time to buy a new one.

If you know what you are doing and have some technical expertise, do it yourself appliance repair can save you money. However, for most of us, we need to call an expert to repair our appliances, and these ten reasons should convince you that it usually makes sense to do that.

    Saving Time

We all want to be as productive as possible, and it’s far less time consuming to call out an expert repair person. That way, you can leave them alone to get on with the task while you do something more useful. Attempting a repair yourself may take you a lot longer than you think and end up wasting time.

    Saving Money

Of course, you can save money by troubleshooting and repairing your own appliances, although you may find that the repairs just don’t last or don’t fix the issue. In that case, you will end up spending more as you will end up having to call in someone else to fix the faulty appliance. Calling a professional who actually has the skill and expertise is more cost-effective than tackling the problem yourself.

    Expert Work

Another advantage of calling the professionals in to repair an appliance is that you can be assured the job will be done thoroughly. A professional repair person has the skills and knowledge to diagnose your issue and get it taken care of; you have the peace of mind knowing that the job is done correctly.

    Knowledgeable

Having the knowledge to carry out the repairs is one compelling reason to call a professional rather than try to tackle the repairs yourself. The expert you call has been trained to handle a variety of repairs on different brands of appliances and install new ones too. And along with technical expertise, goes excellent customer service skills.

    Building Connections

It’s always good to have a strong relationship with a professional repair company. Of course, you hope you never have to call them, but if you do, you can be assured of better service If you are an established customer, whether residential, commercial or industrial.

    Keeping Up With Trends

Not only do appliances change, with new ones being introduced all the time, but the tools, equipment, and techniques used to fix them are constantly changing too. Keeping up with trends and techniques is one of the signs of a good appliance repair company.

    No Need To Buy Tools

If you need to repair a particular appliance, you may well need a specific set of tools to get the job done. Those tools can be expensive, and if you end up buying them yourself, it can cost you a lot. Calling a professional technician means that they come with all the tools and equipment needed to get the job done. They have the right tools, meaning you won’t have the cost of getting them yourself.

    Getting a Deal

Everyone loves a good deal and calling a professional rather than tackling the job yourself means you may be able to take advantage of special offers, promotions, and discounts offered by the company. Repair technicians can help if your warranty is expired.

    Highly Qualified

A good repair company employs technicians who are skilled, qualified, and knowledgeable about the appliances they service. And an added bonus that many customers enjoy when they use a professional technician is that they are often given tips and advice on how to prevent problems and keep their appliances working. It’s a nice bonus.
