When appliances start breaking down, and you don’t know what to do, you may be tempted to give up and replace them with newer models. But there are times that a broken washer, dryer, or fridge can last much longer with just a quick fix.

But how do you tell the difference between needing a new part versus needing an all-new appliance? When you think about replacing appliances, you should consider how long an appliance can work for you and how much it will cost to get the one you have up and running again.

There are a few fixes that come along with owning appliances, and some appliance repair is much easier than you might think. On the other hand, there are times when it makes more sense to replace that broken washer. Following are some of the most common problems homeowners run into with their appliances.

    The Washer

Some issues that come up with a washing machine can be fixed. Here are some simple ones that Comfort Appliance Services has outlined:

    • If the temperature of the water is not what it is supposed to be, you may need to replace the washer’s temperature selector switch.
    • If the washing machine is overfilling, try replacing the water-level switch.
    • Is it extra loud and vibrating? The spin basket may need to be fixed or replaced.
    • If the door won’t stay locked or it won’t open, the problem is the door lock assembly, and it will need to be replaced.

If your washing machine is acting up and it is relatively new, the repairs you need may still be covered by the warranty. However, if there are several things going on with your machine and it is over ten years old, it is probably time to think about getting a new one.

    The Dryer

    • A dryer that runs forever but does not dry your clothes probably has a broken thermal fuse. It will need to be replaced.
    • If your dryer runs but turns off before it is done, try replacing the thermostat.
    • A dryer that shakes until everything you have stored on it falls off is going to need a new drum seal.
    • If your dryer is smoking, it is time to let it go.

If the repairs do not fix the problem and your dryer has been around for a long time, it may be less expensive to just replace it.

    The Refrigerator

    • A door that won’t close the way it is supposed to will need a new door seal.
    • If the refrigerator light does not come on when you open the door, it most likely needs a new light bulb.

If your refrigerator is leaking, the ice maker isn’t working, or your fridge is not staying cool enough, it is a good time to call an appliance repair service. However, if these things are happening and you have had your fridge for more than 13 years, it may be time to look into buying a new refrigerator.

    The Dishwasher

    • If the dishwasher stops before it cycles through, the door may not be closing as it should, and you probably need a new door latch assembly installed.
    • If it is leaking, the door seal should be replaced.
    • If the dishes are not drying, replace the thermostat with a new one.
    • If it is not getting enough water inside, the water inlet valve is probably the culprit and will need to be replaced.
    • If your dishwasher is cracked on the inside and is leaking water, causing damage to your floors or cabinets, you probably need a new dishwasher.

Dishwashers that are ten years old or getting close are probably not going to last much longer, and it is probably time to buy a new one.
